Australian Bar Association welcomes the appointment of Christopher Shanahan SC as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania

The Australian Bar Association welcomes the appointment of Christopher Shanahan SC as the 15th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
‘Mr Shanahan SC will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of Chief Justice, from his forty years of practice as a barrister at the Western Australian Bar and from his time as Acting Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commissioner of Western Australia; Acting Information Commissioner and Senior Sessional Member of the State Administrative Tribunal” said Róisín Annesley KC, President of the ABA.
‘Since 2004 Mr Shanahan has been a driving force in the development and success of the ABA’s Advocacy Training Council, coaching and mentoring numerous Australian and overseas barristers who participate in the training programmes each year. Mr Shanahan was instrumental in the creation of the highly popular bi-annual Appellate Advocacy Workshop.’
‘As Chief Justice, Mr Shanahan SC will lead the Supreme Court of Tasmania, the oldest court in Australia, with distinction.’
Admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1984, Mr Shanahan was appointed silk in 2004. He was appointed Acting Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission of WA between 2005-2007 and again between 2014-2016. He was appointed Acting Information Commissioner 2007.
The appointment will be effective from Monday 20 January 2025. Details of the welcome ceremony are yet to be released.
